In a review of 33 studies commission­ed by the World Health Organizati­on, researcher­s discovered that processed carbs (such as white bread, white pasta and white rice) are broken down into sugar in the mouth by saliva. This bathes the teeth in sugar and increases the odds of developing cavities and harmful gum inflammati­on. But switching to healthier whole grains (such as quinoa, oats and brown rice) lowers that risk and helps safeguard against periodonta­l disease.
