The reason dentists love whole grains
Yet another benefit of opting for whole grains over processed carbohydrates: improved oral health. In a review of 33 studies commissioned by the World Health Organization, researchers discovered that processed carbs (such as white bread, white pasta and white rice) are broken down into sugar in the mouth by saliva. This bathes the teeth in sugar and increases the odds of developing cavities and harmful gum inflammation. But switching to healthier whole grains (such as quinoa, oats and brown rice) lowers that risk and helps safeguard against periodontal disease.
