Surefire way to resist temptation
As you attempt to make good on your New Year’s resolution to include more fruits and vegetables and less sugar in your diet, take a moment to think about how busy you are. According to researchers reporting in the Journal of Consumer Research, this “busy mind-set” will actually make it easier for you to exercise selfcontrol. In their study, participants were asked to write about the various commitments and activities filling their schedules, then given choices requiring them to exert willpower. The surprising results? Reminders of to-do’s and busyness gave people greater restraint, as it elevated their self-esteem and sense of competence.
