Prevent chimney fires with older wood
Half of all home heating fires occur between December and February, according to the National Fire Protection Association. One way to protect yourself? When stocking up for a fireplace, always buy “seasoned” firewood, which has aged at least a year. Since the wood is superdry, it burns hotter than “green” fresh-cut wood, so smoke rises faster and exits the chimney sooner. Why is that key? “Slowmoving smoke that lingers in the chimney is what causes a dangerous, flammable substance known as creosote to build up, putting you at risk of a fire,” says Lt. Kyle Clute of the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department.
