Increasing protein intake improves quality of life
Researchers from the American Geriatrics Society investigated a simple solution to help older adults maintain independence: protein. They followed 722 subjects age 85+ for five years and found those who ate 1 gram or more of protein per every 10 kg. of weight daily were 20% more likely to reduce their risk of disability. The researchers cite protein’s ability to slow the loss of muscle mass and improve stamina, and note that for a 70 kg. (154-pound) woman, one glass of milk or two eggs a day provide the optimal amount.
