The latest viral trend for youthfullooking skin, fast? Slathering a thick layer of petroleum jelly (enough so that it’s like the slimy texture of a slug) onto the face and leaving it on overnight. It’s said to lock in moisture, increase hydration and make creams or oils applied underneath 10 times more effective. But is the gooey mess worth any potential benefits? Our verdict:

We’reskeptical! “I had to wash my face three times just to get the jelly off in the morning, and it also stained my pillowcase. I’d only suggest using this trick on areas that are especially dry.”

—Amanda Prost, FIRST executive editor “After just one night of trying this treatment, I woke up with a few blemishes. Maybe next time, I’ll apply some tea tree oil onto my skin and then put the jelly on top.”
