First For Women

Bottoms up, Mommy!

- —Dana Mullins, 37, Hoover, AL

“I was at the grocery store with my 4-year-old daughter, Lola, when we ran into our church pastor’s wife, Mrs. Burns.

“As we were chatting, Lola kept calling ‘Mommy! Mommy!’ and tugging on my arm. My husband and I had been working with her about being more polite, so I told Lola to be patient. After the third time Lola interrupted us, Mrs. Banks said, ‘Well, this little lady seems to have something very important to say. What is it, sweetie?’ Lola suddenly threw her arms wide and said, ‘Look at all this Mommy juice!’

“When she was 2, Lola would sometimes try to drink my wine, and I would explain that my wine was ‘juice’ for grownups only. Ever since then, she called her juice boxes, ‘Lola juice’ and wine, ‘Mommy juice.’ I suddenly realized we were standing by the wine section. Lola ran from shelf to shelf, pointing at bottles, singing, ‘This is your favorite, and this is your favorite!’ I was beyond embarrassed. But Mrs. Burns patted my arm and said, ‘Like Pastor Burns always says, “Abundant wine is a blessing from the Lord!”’ and chuckled as she walked away.”
