Sweet way to stay sharp

-

Good news for chocolate lovers! The sweet treat is more than just a delicious dessert—University of Illinois investigators say it can keep your brain sharp. Subjects in their small study were given either raw cocoa, which is rich in antioxidant compounds (flavanols), or processed cocoa with fewer flavanols. Two hours later, those who’d consumed raw cocoa performed better on problem-solving tests. The researchers say flavanols improve the flow of oxygen to the brain, which nourishes brain cells to improve memory and recall. The study-proven dose: 1 oz. of 85% or higher cacao chocolate or 2 Tbs. of unprocessed or raw cocoa mixed into a warm or cold drink daily.
