Patriotic cake

“For my family, Memorial Day is about coming together to honor the heroes who have fought for our country,” says Charles Grayauskie, FIRST Associate Food Editor. “And at our get-together this year, I am serving a ‘remembrance’ cake dressed in red, white and blue. To make, I bake a boxed white cake mix in 3 (8") round greased cake pans. Next, I tint 1 (16 oz.) can of vanilla frosting light blue with food coloring, then spread it between the cake layers and on the top and side of the cake. To finish, I divide another can of frosting among 3 bowls, tint 1 red and 1 blue, then divide alternating colors among pastry bags fitted with star tips, pipe over the cake and decorate with sprinkles.”
