“I was going through all my worn-out jeans, and rather than toss them, I decided to turn them into something pretty and practical,” says Patty Bontekoe, FIRST Executive Editor. “My idea: Transform the denim into place mats and napkin rings! To make each, I cut a pant leg to 12" and snip along one seam to form a flat rectangle of fabric. Next, I glue a piece of the waistband to each short end of the mat as trim. Then I cut two flower shapes from jean scraps and glue to a napkin ring.”
