Making perfect ‘cents’

- —Roxanne Whittaker, 45, Shoreham, VT

“My Aunt Beverly was 78 and struggled with arthritic joints, so I offered to help with chores on weekends. While dusting, I noticed she kept a penny jar on her nightstand, but as weeks went by, it never had many coins in it. I kept checking it on my visits and the level didn’t seem to budge.

“‘Why is your penny jar always nearly empty?’ I finally inquired one afternoon as we folded clothes in her room. ‘Do you need more change? I can check my wallet.’

“She grinned. ‘Actually, it’s a good thing,’ she explained. ‘I started putting a penny in the jar whenever I felt low or had a negative thought. At first, they were adding up, but now I take a penny out for every blessing, to ‘count’ them so to speak. You see, the less money I have in the jar, the richer I am.’

“I was so rocked by her admission that I started doing the very same thing. I realized that of all the financial lessons I’ve learned through the years, Aunt Beverly’s was the one that made me see I already have a fortune!”
