"From that FIRST MONTH, I have made A PROFIT every SINGLE MONTH IN THAT SIX YEARS."

IN OUR MAKEOVER ISSUE, WE FEATURED A DIY PROJECT FROM MELANIE ALEXANDER, who owns the vintage business Lost & Found (see Sources). She sells her vintage finds, paint products and unique painted furniture, and has been so successful that she’s begun giving small-business seminars for others who want to get into booth selling. We asked if she would share some of her “Booth Sellers Bootcamp” advice with us, and she graciously obliged.

FLEA MARKET DÉCOR: A LOT OF US LOVE TO SHOP FOR VINTAGE TREASURES. BUT HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT TO TURN IT INTO A BUSINESS?

MELANIE ALEXANDER: For me, I was looking for something to do on the side. The antiques mall near me was my favorite place to shop and I knew a friend who had a small space there. I already liked going to flea markets and decorating with flea-market finds, and I thought it would be fun to have even more reason to go to flea markets. After six months on a wait list, I got my first space, which was about the size of Jacuzzi bathtub. The initial investment was very low. It was under $250, including $60 for the booth rent. From that first month, I have made a profit every single month in that six years. I pay my rent on my space.

FMD: AND YOU GREW INTO A BIGGER SPACE? MA: After a year, I was invited to move downstairs at the antiques mall. That was a bigger investment.

THIS BOOTH BY GRIT AND GRANDEUR stages their pieces in a small vignette, much like one you'd find in a home. Use some of your pieces to build height and bring attention to your smaller treasures.

MELANIE'S NEXT BOOTH BOOTCAMP coaching course will be offered in Spring 2019. Find out more at lostandfounddecor.com/bootcamp.

BOOTH 58 USES TWINKLE LIGHTS for a bit of ambience. They've managed to offer many items while keeping their space clean and uncluttered.

MELANIE USES EVERY SURFACE to her advantage in her Lost & Found booth, staging smaller pieces on her painted furniture for display.
