Flea Market Décor
When they couldn’t find it in reality, these homeowners created a boho, chic French fantasy of their own.
Learn how this couple built a boho chic French bed-and-breakfast with its own extraordinary ambience.
However, this ideal dream home proved elusive, so the couple decided to build it instead. The bright side was they found a contractor as passionate as they were about using salvaged materials. Then came the fun part—the interior decorating. Thanks to their longstanding love affairs with flea markets and antiques, Laurence and Daniel already had a good stock of materials and vintage furniture that would eventually end up decorating their new home. “But some of the construction and decoration work was done simultaneously,” Laurence says. “For example, we bought some old doors and designed the openings based on their measurements.”
The couple particularly loves the Bohemian universe of caravans, Indian and other ethnic inspirations, as well as religious iconography. “We dreamed of making our home an artistic place with a rich and eclectic decoration, a colorful nest full of memories. If we were to define our style, we would say it is Bohemian chic,” says Laurence.
Finally, the family was ready to open their bed-and-breakfast, named “Un Parfum de Violette” (“A Scent of Violet”), a reference to the scent of the flowers in the garden as well as a nod to their daughter Violette. “This project has been like a dream to us, a dream that we cherished for over 15
years,” says Laurence. “We wanted a place completely out of our [modern] time, a magical home where people could savor the pleasure of finding themselves all over again.”
The couple also opened a little room as a shop, where they sell vintage items, cushions, tote bags and organic food, such as juice made from apples grown in their garden. Daniel, who attended an intensive professional program in pastry arts at the renowned Parisian school of French chef Alain Ducasse, offers cooking courses and workshops for adults and kids.
This magical atmosphere enchants their visitors. And when it’s time to leave, there’s usually only one regret for their guests: not being able to stay longer.
