P-51 MUSTANG SHERMAN WAS RIGHT!

FIRST LT. FRANK OILER,78TH FG, 84TH FS

-

“The very first Mustang I was assigned after trading in our P-47s was a black-and-white checkered nose P-51 I christened Sherman was Right! This was in honor of Gen. Sherman’s speech to his Union troops just before their attack on Atlanta during the Civil War. Sherman told the men and boys assembled, ‘Don’t think that this is going to be a turkey shoot. There is many a boy here who looks on war as all glory, but boys, it is all hell!’ I couldn’t have agreed more and thought, ‘Sherman was right!’”
