FIVE KILLS IN 25 MINUTES

This was published in a Laguna, California newspaper on May 14, 1945:

“Major George C. Axtell became an ace in 25 minutes when he knocked down five enemy aircraft in that period, while he participat­ed with his Marine Corps squadron in running up the highest recorded score for a single squadron in an aerial battle. According to delayed reports from the Pacific Theater, seven ‘Plane a Minute’ pilots from VMF323 shot down 24.75 Jap planes, with no Marine losses, in a hectic 25 minutes. Major Axtell is reported to have jumped from zero scores to the required five or more to become an ace. Major Axtell is the squadron commander of VMF-323.”
