“What’s the next big thing on the culinary front for Hawai‘i? Neighborhood restaurants,” says Chef Sheldon Simeon, an award-winning Maui chef and “Top Chef” finalist. He serves up gourmet, local-style comfort food at his Kahului restaurant, TINROOF. While his cuisine has earned national recognition, when he gets hungry, he hits up Maui’s local spots. “Good neighborhood restaurants that have a great feeling the moment you walk in the door, as if you were being invited into someone’s home.”

OKI’S SEAFOOD CORNER Kahului

“This is my go to spot to get local seafood, fish and poke (cubed, seasoned, raw fish). What I love about Oki’s is that they do super traditional-style poke, using cuts of fish that you hardly see anymore. They also have a great variety of local fresh fish you won’t find anywhere.”

MO ‘ONO FOOD TRUCK Kahului

“Mo ‘Ono truck is the spot where me and the TINROOF crew go to get our acai bowl fix! These ladies are serving up super delicious and fresh bowls that we’re borderline obsessive about. What makes them the best is their inclusion of items like poi (Hawaiian staple made from taro root), Greek yogurt and our favorite, liliko‘i butter!”

MISO PHAT SUSHI Kīhei

“This unassuming spot is located in a strip mall in Kīhei and serves some of the freshest fish you’ll find on the island. A lot of the time, fish comes directly from the owner’s personal boat. Chef Ahren Uyeda’s sushi is excellent, with the perfect balance of tradition and creativity.”

SAVAGE KITCHEN MAUI Wailuku

“Looking for the most interesting meal you’ll find on Maui? Sunny Savage is the foremost expert on wild, invasive species. Her food truck creates some of the most imaginative, delicious dishes utilizing these foraged, invasive ingredients.” Get inspired at #LetHawaiiHappen
