Capitalism Reimagined— Here’s What We’re Doing

-

This marks the 33rd time we’ve produced the definitive chronicle of the world’s richest people—a project that serves both to inspire and to transparently inform the public about who owns what where.

Across more than three decades, we’ve seen numerous ups and downs in the financial cycle—and the public’s relationship with billionaires. Right now, the political winds blow against the ultrarich, in large part because many people rightly feel they don’t have a fair shot at such success. In “Reimagining Capitalism,” starting on page 30, I lay out three ways to move forward. In an effort to lead, rather than merely chronicle, we’ll start with ourselves.

inclusivity: Opportunity starts at the first rungs of the ladder. Through our Under 30 platform, we’re going to expand our Under 30 Scholars program, which brings some 1,000 top students from underrepresented groups into that powerful ecosystem; we’re hosting our first-ever Under 30 Global Women’s Summit in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem; and we’ve launched a new Diversity & Inclusion channel at Forbes.com.

Corporate Citizenry: The Just 100 will play a bigger role at Forbes, holding the largest corporations accountable to conduct business in the manner Americans expect of them. And we’re relocating our flagship Under 30 Summit to Detroit, a move that aligns with our mission of expanding opportunity.

investing With Purpose: From impact investing to financial advisor best practices to ensuring that opportunity zones revitalize rather than just gentrify, we’re hosting major gatherings to improve how capital gets deployed.

Philanthropy: For most of this decade, we’ve led the discussion on how the super-successful can give back earlier, more generously—and more effectively. Next stop, Europe. We’ll also continue to score The Forbes 400 based on how charitably they act. From those to whom much is given, much is expected.

The Future: We’ll continue the conversation around Reimagining Capitalism—on these pages, online, across our social channels and at our live events. For 102 years, Forbes has been a champion of entrepreneurial capitalism, which has created more prosperity and innovation than any system in human history. It’s our mission to ensure it remains healthy for another 102.
