BILLION SELF-MADE SCORE: * SOURCE: INTEL AGE: 90 RESIDENCE: WOODSIDE CA PHILANTHROPY SCORE: One of Silicon Valley’s most pivotal business leaders, he once said his career as an entrepreneur was “by accident.” Moore was pursuing a career as a scientist when the poor management skills of his Nobel Prize-winning boss at Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory inspired him and seven others ( “the traitorous eight”) to leave and start Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957. He worked at Fairchild for 11 years,
after which he and Robert Noyce split off to start semiconductor firm Intel, which he ran for years. His foundation has donated millions to the Thirty Meter Telescope in Hawaii; construction began in July. Activists say the telescope disrespects a sacred site; proponents argue it will help scientists learn about the universe.
