He later quit and moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he cofounded the online brokerage company Scottrade in 1980. He sold it to Joe Ricketts’ (No. 333) TD Ameritrade for $4 billion in cash and stock in 2017, two years after he was diagnosed with the blood cancer multiple myeloma. He has since donated $40 million to Washington University to research the disease and develop treatments for neurodegen­erative illnesses.
