In June he bid $12 million for WABC in New York. The bulk of his fortune lies in real estate and a Pennsylvania oil refinery. After graduating from Brooklyn Tech high school in 1967, Catsimatidis got a job at Red Apple Grocery, stocking shelves and unloading deliveries for $1.10 an hour, then working his way up to cashier. He continued working at Red Apple while attending New York University, then dropped out shy of graduating to buy half the grocery store for $10,000. Today he owns the Gristedes chain of grocery stores.
