Hunt’s 15 children, he and his brother Nelson discovered the Sarir Field in Libya, one of the largest oilfields on the African continent, in 1961. The brothers then made a massive bet on silver that imploded, causing them to file for personal bankruptcy in 1988. Hunt has been back in The Forbes 400 ranks since 2013, after selling oilfields worth $1.5 billion. He remains an advisor to Petro-Hunt, which picked up land and operating wells in North Dakota’s Williston Basin in 2018.
