With many of its Silicon Valley peers under fire for privacy breaches and plummeting consumer trust, Apple has taken a different tack, strengthening what was already an impressive approach to data security. It publishes biannual reports on the volume of customer-data requests received from governments around the world, and a recent update to its mobile software added a privacy icon—two people shaking hands—to indicate when an app is collecting personal information.
