“There have been programs [to promote] diversity, but the way I look at it is through the proverb: If you give a person a fish, they eat for a day, but if you teach them to fish, they’ll eat for a lifetime. In this business most [potential] fishermen are not around the dock. You have to invite them onto your boat. The wealth-management industry does a decent job of mentoring, but it has not actually invited an inclusive group onto the boat.”
