Given the technologies’ battlefield applications, it’s not surprising that defense electronics firms like Raytheon Technologies and Lockheed Martin are important players, but it’s possible to participate in the sector with a portfolio that has a more civilian flavor.

Analog Devices makes sensors that put a stopwatch on rays of light for robots to measure distances. NXP Semiconductors has sensors for cars to measure temperature, pressure and acceleration. Infineon Technologies has chips that sniff carbon dioxide to assess indoor air quality. Teledyne Technologies has thermal imagers used in environmental monitors.
