The Elec­toral Col­lege is com­ing un­der with­er­ing crit­i­cism. Hil­lary Clin­ton won more pop­u­lar votes than Don­ald Trump yet lost the pres­i­dency be­cause Trump de­ci­sively racked up a ma­jor­ity of elec­toral votes. The same thing hap­pened in 2000, when Ge­orge W. Bush went to the White House even though op­po­nent Al Gore bested him in the pop­u­lar vote. This makes a mock­ery of democ­racy, charge crit­ics, who are call­ing for a di­rect pop­u­lar vote.

Ac­tu­ally, the Elec­toral Col­lege is a unique Amer­i­can in­sti­tu­tion that has served the coun­try well. •
