The Electoral College is coming under withering criticism. Hillary Clinton won more popular votes than Donald Trump yet lost the presidency because Trump decisively racked up a majority of electoral votes. The same thing happened in 2000, when George W. Bush went to the White House even though opponent Al Gore bested him in the popular vote. This makes a mockery of democracy, charge critics, who are calling for a direct popular vote.
Actually, the Electoral College is a unique American institution that has served the country well. •
