NELLY LAHOUD is a leading scholar o! extremist ideology and has written extensivel­y on political Islam and the process o! radicaliza­tion. Fluent in Arabic and French, she has held research and teaching positions at the University o! Cambridge, Harvard, the Library o! Congress, and West Point and is now a senior fellow at New America. After working as a China correspond­ent for The Wall Street Journal, MATT POTTINGER joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served three tours o! duty in Afghanista­n and Iraq. In 2017, he accepted a position in the Trump administra­tion, "rst as senior director for Asia on the National Security Council sta# and then as deputy national security adviser. He resigned his position on January 6, 2021, the day pro-trump rioters attacked the U.S. Capitol. Now a senior adviser at the Marathon Initiative, Pottinger argues in “Beijing’s American Hustle” (page 102) that U.S. o$cials are still failing to appreciate how China is taking advantage o! the United States.

Born in Seoul and raised in Hawaii and Virginia, SUE MI TERRY joined the CIA after receiving her PH.D. in internatio­nal relations from Tufts University. An analyst focused on Northeast Asia, she served on the National Security Council sta# under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. She is now a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and Internatio­nal Studies. In “North Korea’s Nuclear Family” (page 115), Terry argues that after decades o! missed opportunit­ies, Washington is rapidly running out o! options to contain the North Korean nuclear threat.

Both a doctor and an economist by training, RAJIV SHAH served as the administra­tor o! the U.S. Agency for Internatio­nal Developmen­t from 2010 to 2015. During his tenure, the agency responded to an earthquake in Haiti, an Ebola outbreak in West Africa, and a famine in South Sudan. Today, Shah is president o! the Rockefelle­r Foundation. In “The COVID Charter” (page 179), he calls for a new approach to economic developmen­t focused on narrowing the gap between rich and poor.
