Statewide tests: Fort Bragg High School

- By Mary Benjamin reporter@advocate- news.com

In some aspects, the academic school year of 2018-19 was a banner year for Fort Bragg High School. In spite of the challenges of serving a rural community and having a large student population designated as “disadvantaged,” the school exceeded the state’s outcome in the language arts test scores.

Math results were not nearly as similar, but a comparison to other schools is helpful.

For the purpose of comparison, all the data here is based upon the 2018-19 standardized test results of 11th graders only for the state, Fort Bragg High School and two other regional high schools. Also included are graduation rates and college/career preparedness rates.

This last data set is another way to examine the likely success of students when they leave high school after completing 12th grade.

How FBHS is doing

Fort Bragg High School, not including Noyo High School or the other alternative school campuses in the district, has a student population of 512 students, of which 62.9 percent are identified as “disadvantaged,” 41.8 percent are ethnically Hispanic and 6.1 percent are English learners. The percentage of English learners at the high school is the lowest in the district.

For the 11th graders’ 2019 state test results in language arts, 57.2 percent exceeded ormet state standards. Fort Bragg students ranked above the state’s overall 11th- grade score by 6.47 percentage points, a significant achievement. Of local 11th graders, 41.8 percent did fall below state standards, but the bulk of that number is in the “nearly met” category which provides the opportunity for improvement.

The high school’s results in math indicate that challenges are ahead.
