100 Years Ago Sept. 14, 1921

• Miss Frances Auser was compelled to order the children out of the Melburne school house one day last week when a forest fire burned right up to the door of the building. The entire gulch on the Big River side at that place was ablaze.

• Caspar: Born Monday evening to the wife of Chas. Gibson, a baby boy. Mother and babe are doing nicely.

• An occasion arose this week whereby the humble mule had a chance to demonstrat­e his superiorit­y over the gas wagon. A Ford truck had been made a prisoner at Decker’s old camp in the Caspar woods by the falling of timber across the road and it was necessary to take the truck apart and pack it out on the back of mules. The truck was recently purchased by Ed Rassmussen, of Mendocino, and James Bowman, of the same city, had charge of the work.

• John B. O’Brian a moving picture director of broad experience and recognized ability, is here making arrangemen­ts for the R. A. Walsh Co., which is coming next week to “shoot” Peter Kyne’s famous novel, “Kindred of the Dust,” in this locality. It is planned to take scenes in connection with the lumber industry at Caspar, Fort Bragg, Glen Blair and Ten Mile. Mr. O’Brien is highly elated with our wonderful scenery and spoke very highly of the courteous manner in which he has been treated by all he has come in contact with.

75 Years Ago Sept. 18, 1946

• W. S. (Shirdi) Ware has declared his intention of purchasing Giusti’s Cocktail Lounge on Franklin Street and this week’s Advocate and News is publishing his State Board of Equalizati­on Notice. Mr. Giusti has been in business for a number of years and has made many friends who regret to see him retire.

• Dr. E. G. Stevens, who has conducted an office on Laurel Street for the past year, left Fort Bragg the forepart of this week to accept a position in

San Francisco. His offices will be taken over by Dr. Jaques, of San Francisco.

• The Mendocino County Democratic Central Committee will be host to Jimmie Roosevelt and party this Friday night at a big rally in the Cotton Auditorium. Roosevelt is Democratic State Central Committee Chairman and he will be accompanie­d by Will Rodgers, Jr., candidate for United States Senator; John F. Shelley, candidate for Lt. Governor; Edmond G. Brown, candidate for Attorney General and John P. McEnery, vice chairman of the State Central Committee.

• Charles (Bud) Olson was in Fort Bragg over the weekend to visit his wife and family. Bud is now located in San Jose in an accounting and insurance business.

50 Years Ago Sept. 23, 1971

• A 21-year-old Rockport timber faller died of internal injuries Monday after a log struck him. Manuel E. Chavez, working for the Surpur Timber Co., of Alder Point, was setting chokers on a landing seven miles east of Juan Creek when a log swung around, knocking him unconsciou­s. He was brought by ambulance to the hospital and was dead on arrival.

• Friends and relatives were on hand September 11 to mark the silver wedding anniversar­y of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Giannini, of

Fort Bragg. Bonnie and Ed were married September 10, 1946, in Reno, Nev.

• The 36-foot fishing boat “Terron,” operated by Tom Nelson, of Trinidad, was towed to port at Noyo Monday morning by the Coast Guard Cutter Pt. Ledge after she reported a broken fuel line while 40 to 50 miles west of here Sunday morning at 11:30. The Coast Guard located the boat 65 miles west of Point Arena Sunday night and arrived back at Noyo early Monday with the disabled vessel.

• A requiem mass for Teresa Maria Paicci, 81, will be held this morning. Mrs. Paicci passed away Sunday morning following a short illness. She was a native of Tomba di Meretto, Italy. She came to the United States in 1913 and had made her home in Fort Bragg until moving to Santa Rosa earlier this year. She is survived by three children, Louis Borcich, Florence Copland and Robert Borcich. Acting as pallbearer­s will be Westwood Copland, Frank Franceschi, Steve Foppiano, Harry Berrettini, Joe Bernardini and Albert Penitenti.

• At Coast Theatre: “Lawrence of Arabia” starring Peter O’Toole and Omar Sharif. “Evel Knievel” starring George Hamilton and Sue Lyon.

38 Years Ago Sept. 22, 1983

• Memorial services for Miriam Cain Vashkulat were held Saturday. A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, she was born Jan. 2, 1907. She moved to The Woods, near Little River, nearly 20 years ago. Mimi was organist and office worker for the Mendocino Presbyteri­an Church, the current president of the Woodlander­s Associatio­n, and had served on the Mendocino Coast Hospital Board of Directors for the last two years. She was also a member of the

Mendocino Study Club and a columnist for the Advocate-News and Mendocino Beacon.

• By Al Cattalini: Jim Larsen and Peg Hamlin won last week’s “Buoys and Gulls” fun tourney at the Little River Inn golf course, narrowly edging the teams of Jay Hathaway and Kay Burkhurt, and Bob Reid and Winnie Gray who were tied at second place.

• Casting is complete for Ted Mosel’s adaptation of James Agee’s Pulitzer Prize and New York Drama Critic’s Award winning novel “A Death In The Family.” The play, entitled “All The Way Home,” will be directed by Sandra Hawthorne and will run at the Helen Schoeni Theatre. Set design is by Herb Steiniger and costumes are designed by Paula Fullan. The cast includes Darryl Hasten, Ana Lucas, Loren Pennock, Olaf Olsen, Aaron Paoli, Kim Strom, Joel Pennock, Jim Bertram, Leif Boyd, Danny Cohen, Brendan Cusick, Helen Daggett, Yosha Ellis, Margo Farrar, Dan Godeke, Oliver Graham, Jody Hand, Larry Hanlon and Marilyn Huddleston.
