Are electronic charging stations the future of Fort Bragg?

- By Priscilla Comen

At a recent joint meeting of the League of Women Voters and Grass Roots Institute, exciting news was divulged to the public. LWV is the group of men and women who study issues and encourage citizens to exercise their rights to vote on those matters. Grass Roots Institute, a relatively new organization, was formed in 2015 and taught classes on alternate ways of acting as citizens of our society. At a recent meeting, they discussed solar panels on government buildings, charging stations for the area, and electric buses for the MTA. The climate division is currently working with the Board of Supervisors to reduce the carbon footprint. Hence, the plan for multiple charging stations is listed below.

To curb carbon emissions, leading auto manufacturers are geared up to ensure half of all new cars will be electric by 2030. Hauling vehicles and tourist visitors using Highway 101 and Highway One will need more public access charging stations. We’ll need stations at hotels, B and Bs, and campgrounds, as well as at state parks, shopping, and restaurant areas. State and local governments will charge fees from users just as toll bridges and parks do. Long haul trucks will not want to wait in lines, so some chargers must be rapid while the driver gets a bite to eat. Tourists will need to plan their routes to stay overnight at a special destination. Tesla puts up charging stations at homes for a different rate from your home electric bill.

Here is a list of charging station locations on the coast: Ocean View Lodge on Main Street, Mac Kerricher State Park, Noyo Harbor Inn, Caspar Community Center, Pt Cabrillo Light Station, Russian Gulch State Park, Brewery Gulch Inn’, Van Damme State Park, Dennen’s Victorian Farm House, Heritage House Resort, Albion River Inn, Elk Cove Inn, and the Coast Guard House in Point Arena.
