Golf Notes: St. Paddy’s Day Scramble

-

Last Sunday’s St. Paddy’s Day Scramble was a rousing success. Thirteen four-person teams, fiftytwo players, took to the field on a somewhat windy but tolerable day. The proceeds from the event were passed on to the

Ft. Bragg Golf Team. Coach Eric Shellman announced that the team had played its first tournament last week and was the only team without “uniforms”. With the help of parental donations, the golf team was able to buy hats and with the tournament proceeds, the team will now purchase jackets. There was also a one-winner raffle for $5.00 a ticket or 6 tickets for $20.00. The winner of the raffle was Kira Meade.

The winners of the scramble were team Phil Dunn, Butch Carlstedt, Dan Macy, and Jim Howarth. This team came in a seven-under-par 64.

The second-place team also finished seven under par but in a cardoff lost first place to the Phil Dunn team. The second-place team members were Chuck Allegrini, Bryan Nez, Larry Miller, and Nancy Acosta. A card-off is when, due to a tie, a tournament official, in this case, Dave Hautala, goes back on the cards to break the tie. The tied team’s scorecards are compared starting from the last hole. Going back the first team to outscore the other team wins. The third-place team coming in at a six-under 65 was Matt Howard, Jay Hudson, Kathy Gibney, and Jay Koski. The fourth and final place team was headed by Dan Barrett with teammates Everett Taylor, John Johansen, and Kira Meade. This team also finished with a 65 but lost to the Matt Howard team in the card-off.

The general ambiance of the event was one of friendly, joyful, and togetherness. The golfing community, due to Covid, has missed these opportunities for gathering together, playing with different players, and enjoying the game at a different level. And at the tournament’s end, there was Kathy Shepley dishing up the beans next to Glen Beck passing out the pork rounds. Glen cooked the beans and the pork rounds from a recipe handed down from Men’s Club members Mike Meuschke and Garry Van Tassel. Also served were a nice green salad and coleslaw. Wine, beer, and soft drinks were also available.

Much gratitude to the Men’s Club organizers of the event, the Ft. Bragg golf team who helped on and off the course, and to Kathy and Glen for handling the food. Next Sunday, March 27th the course will be closed to accommodate another disk golf tournament.
