Crash kills man, injures another
One man was killed and another seriously injured when the truck they were riding in crashed down an embankment on Mountain View Road near Manchester, the California Highway Patrol reported.
According to the CHP, a man was driving a 2020 Freightliner boom truck westbound on Mountain View Road around 7:25 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, when the vehicle failed to negotiate a turn, hit a guardrail, then overturned down the dirt embankment.
The driver was killed as a result of the crash. The passenger, identified as 24-year-old Jose Hernandez of Camino, suffered major injuries and was taken to Adventist Health Mendocino Coast hospital for treatment.
The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as Edgar Castillo, 37, of Elk Grove.
According to Jacqueline Alvarez, the driver of the truck was her relative, whom she described as working “as a subcontractor helping clear roads for various communities in Northern California after severe weather systems and wildfires,” and that on Jan. 7, he was “on his way to clear debris for a community near Manchester (while the area was) experiencing floods, downed trees and powerlines with widespread power outages.”
Alvarez also described Castillo as “a hardworking family man (who) leaves behind a family of six, including twins with special needs. Above all things, he loved his family deeply.”
She created a GoFundMe account in his name, explaining that Castillo “was the primary provider and all donations will go to his family for financial support.”
