Tracking Common Ravens to Understand their Movement around Western Snowy Plover Nesting Beaches. Monday, January 23 at 7:00 PM at the Fort Bragg Lions Club, 430 E

Redwood Ave, Fort Bragg. From their twisting aerial displays, intimate partner bonding activities, and complex social behaviors, common ravens can be exhilarating to observe. These large, glossy black birds are native to Humboldt County’s dune ecosystems, but human activities’ food subsidies have made them problematic for many other native species. One such species is the federally threatened Western snowy plover, a cryptic beach-nesting shorebird that breeds in Humboldt County. Ravens are the number one nest predator of snowy plovers, so Cal Poly Humboldt graduate student Janelle Chojnacki is using GPS units and colored leg bands to track and observe beach-going ravens in order to understand better the resources influencing these ravens’ behavior. This seminar will discuss the fascinating ecology and interactions of ravens and snowy plovers and what we can all do to enjoy both species sustainably.

Fort Bragg Girls Softball Registration

Sign up now for girls ages four years (by April 1st) to 8th grade. You can either register with our online form, or paper forms can be picked up anytime at Rick Friar Insurance Agency on Main St. or at the C. V. Starr Community Center. Signup fees are $85 per player and $10 off registration for siblings. The volunteer retainer is a $40 fee per family. The fee will be returned once 2 hours of volunteering are completed. We will not be able to accept ANY registrations on February 1st. Please make sure you have your child registered before we close registration. This also applies to ALL girls trying out for the middle school team. We understand tryouts will be after registration closes, but middle school players need to register with us as their backup plan in case they are not selected for the middle school team to ensure that they do not miss out on a year of playing time. Please note we have broken up our old tee ball division and added a coach pitch-only division (no hitting off the tee). Tee ball division will continue to be the same as before, with the coach pitch then hitting off the tee. If you have any questions, email fbgsa707@gmail.com.

Guest House Docents

The Guest House Museum in Fort Bragg needs additional volunteer docents. Being a museum docent isn’t hard; it only takes a few hours a month. Being a docent is like being a good host in your own home. Docents greet everyone who comes through the museum’s front door. It’s where anyone can learn about Fort Bragg, the region, and what went into forming and keeping this community thriving. You don’t need to be a historian or “history nerd,” and training is available. To find out more, call 707 9644251 or email info@fortbragghistory.org. storytelling. We invite you, our valued community, to join us as together we embark upon our 46th year presenting plays of substance and excitement, from classics to cutting edge.
