Two children’s bookshelves at Mendocino Coast Clinics

- Submitted

Putting books into the hands of children opens doors to a bigger world for them. That is why private donors, in conjunction with Gallery Bookshop, have arranged to make books readily available to more children in our community. They are doing so via two different outlets at Mendocino Coast Clinics Pediatrics:

Within the waiting room, there sits a display case full of books to read to young children. The selection includes books in both English and Spanish, geared to infants through early readers. Studies have shown that reading to children helps build verbal skills and facilitates mental development as well as creativity. Plus, it provides a cozy way to spend time together, wrapped up in the magical spell of stories and pictures.

For anyone who becomes enthralled and regrets having to leave books in the waiting room at Mendocino Coast Pediatrics, just outside the building stands a Little Free Library. Built by Cody Morgan and painted by Kenlly Reyes when they were both still students at Fort Bragg High School, it rests at toddler height and resembles the home of elves. Inside await books available for the taking. Some of them are “advanced reader copies,” books that Gallery Bookshop received prior to publication. Others are donations by individuals.

Wondering what to do with all those books your children or grandchildren have outgrown? Donate them to this Little Free Library! Let’s keep the elves’ house stocked so that more children on the coast can have ample books within their own homes: books to comfort, entertain and educate.

The Pediatrics Clinic is located at 510 Cypress Street, Suite D. Contact Jeanette Boyer if you have questions: jboyer@mcn.org.
