Tip Top no more

Rack ‘em up

In two weeks of League play new battleground lines are being drawn up. New players and new teams are challenging the status quo. The Tip Top doesn’t exist, is a closed business, and is in Fort Bragg’s history. Then how are there Tip Top teams? Who sponsors them? Is it time for a business that is actually open and benefits from our advertising to be its sponsor? We do want the teams to exist, but using a closed business seems unfair to our regular sponsors and players alike. What do you think?

Have you spent any time playing 15-1 8-ball? The game is the same as any regular 8-ball game except the 1 and 15 balls must be played to opposite side pockets. Meaning the first to put their 1 or 15 down, leaves just a single pocket, on the opposite side for the opponent. The 8-ball must also go to the side of the table you put your 1 or 15 balls in. Because the game is more difficult there are fewer runouts and the game does last longer. When you are playing a regular 8-ball game it is not surprising to only shoot once or twice per game. It does depend on the skill level of the players but our town has a big group of good players. We also used to have a group of men and women that could bowl very well and had Leagues, but alas, the bowling alley is no longer a place to spend time for the whole family. I wish a Bowling Alley could come back to Fort Bragg for family entertainment. Speaking of entertainment, we plan to start March 9 2023 with threeperson teams for a second night of League on Thursdays at 7:00 pm at our regular sponsors. We meet at Welcome at 7:00 pm on the 9th. We have people signed up and new sheets are near the pool tables. Ideas and opinions are a good thing so speak up, call Linda with questions as she has the final say.

8-BALL BREAK >>

Visit Fort Bragg Pool League sponsors: Angelina’s Grille & Bar, Golden West Saloon, Milano Hotel, and Bar, or Welcome Inn: all maintain a schedule of Fort Bragg Pool League players and teams. Look to the list for someone you might know and find where they are playing. You might join a team, make new friends, or just watch 8-ball games unfold. The League plays Tuesday at 7 pm ending before 10 pm. Tournaments, if held, are posted near pool tables anyone can enter. League returned and Tournaments sputtered to a stop. This Saturday, March 11 begins a 15-1 tournament at Welcome Inn at 4:00 pm.

CUE TIP >> Some players say they “learn better” by playing pool, rather than drills. They might be thinking of methods. You can learn by watching a method your opponent used to get a position. You might learn how to play a ball if they show you how. If they did show you, would you practice? That means playing it over and over and that is called a drill. Drills will speed up your learning curve, literally by years. What? Yep, take a look around, don’t you see players that have decades of playing pool, but don’t play very well? How is it that after they have played for decades they still do not know how to use spin on the cue ball for a benefit or play kick or bank shots well? How can that be? Because,

after 20 years, maybe they are still “learning to play pool better” by playing other pool players. If the play that caused you difficulty only comes up once in a while, how do you become proficient in playing it? When you play that same shot 100 times over a day or days, you will likely have it down. Then you might go on to your next problem shot and solve it the same way, by using a pool drill, and you will very quickly become a better player. Contact me at mcbohanon@gmail.com.
