Back from Costa Rica

-

Due to circumstances beyond my control, CBMC, Golf Notes has returned prematurely from Costa Rica to sunny, rainy, snowy California. My wife, Jan, and I got a ride to the airport Tuesday, March 7th from our lovely Costa Rican neighbors and property caretakers. Rafa and Raquel coincidently needed to travel to Cartago to see Raquel’s mother. They offered and did connect us with a friend who is an Uber driver who would meet us in Cartago and take us to the airport in San Jose. It worked out well and the route to the airport via Cartago is lovely. Costa Rica is really a mountainous country. There is the Pacific side and the Caribbean side separated by mountains. The country is 170 miles from east to west, is approximately the size of West Virginia, and takes around nine to ten hours to drive coast to coast. Driving from our coast to Ukiah either via highway 120 or 128 and

15 is similar to driving through the mountains in Costa Rica. On parts of 120 when the northern very remote view of the valleys and mountains is revealed it is very much like Costa Rica. Except Costa Rica is more jungle-y. Both have that “Wow! What’s going on out there allure.”

Back on the Coast. Last Friday the clouds parted and I thought yeah golf. I drove to the course really wanting to take my Costa Rica sand wedge guava game to a real fairway hitting real golf balls. It was a Stableford format day and I thought there would be a good attendance. Everyone would be anxious to get out on the course after so much rain. Nope. There were two other contenders, Scott Deitz and Jim Ehlers who teamed up to play at the next level of the NCGA 4 Ball Qualifier at the Santa Rosa Country Club. No other Stableford players were there. Of course, the Minors, Dave, and Wendy were present as well as a number of other players but only three for the Stableford game. We ambled on out to the first tee and after a couple of holes, I realized having not played in a while I only had nine holes in me. Scott and Jim played the first nine respectively both scoring a fortyone. The course appeared in pretty good condition given all the rain. There were some soggy spots and you could use a sand trap to wash your ball but overall the course is fine.

As you all know the Campbell Scramble was scheduled to be played last Sunday march 12th but due to rain, it is rescheduled for March 19th, 9:30, shotgun start.
