IN A WORLD FACING GROWING ECONOMIC and environmental uncertainties, businesses that are able to step up and help address these concerns can make a critical global impact. Leading resale company Winmark Corporation is doing just that. The Minneapolis-based organization has always viewed corporate social and environmental responsibility as not merely an obligation, but rather a fundamental framework that’s enabled the business to thrive financially while actively contributing to the betterment of society. “Sustainability and small business formation are key to our strategy,” says Brett D. Heffes, chair and CEO at Winmark. “Our mission is to provide resale for everyone for the benefit and health of the local communities we serve.” Through its brands Plato’s Closet®, Once Upon A Child®, Play It Again Sports®, Style Encore®, and Music Go Round®, the company has recycled more than 1.6 billion clothing items, sporting goods, and musical instruments since 2010—including approximately 169 million items in 2022 alone. And its growing network of more than 1,300 locally owned buying centers reduces shipping-related fuel and packaging consumption while also effectively creating economic opportunities in local communities throughout North America. “On average, each Winmark store pays out more than $390,000 to its local community annually by purchasing gently used items directly from consumers and repurposing them to new owners,” says Heffes. “Winmark also trains its franchisees, who have an eagerness to grow and contribute to a sustainable world, on how to build a thriving business.” Winmark’s success and ongoing commitment to sustainability and making a difference in local communities is fueled by its shared mission among its partners, according to Heffes. “Winmark has something that most companies crave—clarity of purpose,” says Heffes. “When you have a mission that’s simple, it’s very easy to communicate consistently. Working in collaboration with others who are passionate about making a positive influence on communities and the world fosters motivated, committed, and productive employees.” Heffes believes that being named to the Fortune Change the World list is a testament to these employees, as well as the individuals behind each of its local franchises who are passionate about sustainability and giving back to their communities. “This recognition validates the hard work and determination that our franchise partners and employees have demonstrated over the past 30 years,” says Heffes. “It is a true honor.”
