Forward Into The Past Chana Pollack’s Archival Dive

A DEEP DIVE INTO OUR ARCHIVES

Forward Magazine - - Contents - BY CHANA POLLACK

ON A BREAK from their busy New York City lives taming capitalism, two beloved socialists are seen cuddling up to another growing beast. Pictured here on a 1930s trip to Los Angeles where the West Coast business offices of the Forverts were located, are Judge Jacob Panken (standing, at left) accompanied by Forverts business manager B. Charney Vladeck. Vladeck was general manager of the Forverts for over two decades and also served as a New York City Councilman from the American Labor Party. Panken was president of the Forward Association in 1920, and ran unsuccessfully for governor, mayor and senator on the Socialist Party ticket. What the baby lion or the guy crouching next to it might have thought about these pioneers of the Jewish labor movement is anybody’s guess.
