Funny, I never knew there were so many winch manufacturers until I read “Which Winch Is Which?” (Feb. ’18).

I have an old winch on my old Ford F-250. The last time I had to use the winch was over a year ago, but even though I don’t use it much when I do need it it’s good to have around. I bought it used off Craigslist (really cheap) and aside from the cable being trashed it was ready to go.

I read “Which Winch Is Which?” and it has given me a lot to think about. I want to add a rear winch to my Jeep JK (already have one on the front), because there are times I want to winch backward and not frontward.

I’m one of those guys that’s torn on which winch to buy. Your story in the February issue (“Which Winch Is Which?”) just compounded my problem. Here’s my deal: I want a winch, but I know I’m not going to use it much. I would use it mostly to self-recover or help rescue someone from the snow in the winter here in Minnesota. My truck is a daily driven ’08 Silverado 1500. Do I buy a low-buck winch or do I lay out the cash for a more expensive winch? The prices run from just a few hundred bucks to over a thousand. I’ve read about folks who are really happy with their inexpensive winches, while others aren’t.

I need that Red Winches dual motor kit in my life. It would look great on my 8274.

Many years ago I wanted a winch for the front of my Ram 1⁄2-ton pickup, but I also wanted a winch for the rear. And occasionally I needed to drag stuff onto my flatbed trailer. I couldn’t afford three winches, so I bought a Superwinch S9000, built a cradle, and added hitch receivers to the front of my truck and the trailer (already had one on the back of the truck). With that setup I could just move the winch where I needed it. Most of the time it was on the front of the truck. One day the transmission puked on my truck and a friend came to rescue me with his truck and gooseneck trailer. I used the winch to pull my truck onto his trailer. The uses for a winch are many and I can’t imagine being without one.

Wheelers are very passionate about their winches. Perhaps because winches routinely help to solve problems. Sometimes very big ones. We think a winch is one of the best investments you can make for your 4x4. Choosing a winch can be a challenge with all the offerings available nowadays, but we hope that the “Which Winch Is Which?” story helped to inform with a mega collection of options.
