PERFECT WHEELING WEEKEND
My perfect wheeling weekend? Miles and miles and miles of dirt that requires four-wheel drive, completely loaded down with camping gear, kayaks, and fishing poles, my family of four loaded up in the truck and no cell phone service for miles. That’s my perfect wheeling.

You asked for my perfect wheeling weekend and here it is: the Rubicon Trail. I’ve wheeled it many times over the last 20 years and it never gets old. I love everything about it, even when I pretzel parts. To me there’s nowhere else like it. A few cold ones around the campfire in the evening always rounds out a perfect day.

My perfect wheeling weekend is in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The first time I wheeled the area I was hooked and I’ve returned many times. Imogene Pass is my favorite, but Black Bear and Poughkeepsie are also my top trails. The switchbacks on Black Bear as it drops into Telluride still get my heart racing, Imogene’s shelf trails are attention-getters, and Poughkeepsie has an obstacle that has cost me sheetmetal a time or two. They’re all scenic, but Yankee Boy Basin is hard to beat for incredible scenery. I tried to get over Mosquito Pass (near Leadville) once, but my truck started shedding parts so I had to turn around. One of these days I will conquer that trail.

Windrock Park in Tennessee is my perfect wheeling weekend. It has like over 70,000 acres. Need I say more?

Summer stinks. My perfect wheeling weekend is on a snowy trail in my Jeep TJ. One time I wheeled a rock-crawling trail covered in over a foot of snow. That was fun. It looked relatively flat covered in snow, but it didn’t take long to find out that it was anything but.

My perfect wheeling weekend is every time I go wheeling on a weekend.

Thanks to everyone who shared their perfect wheeling weekend stories. One of the things we noticed about the responses is how they ran the gamut of wheeling types and locations. This is another example of how varied the world of wheeling is.
