The Spooky SLEEPOVER MYSTERY

Lex is usually the one to prank her friends on Halloween, but now someone got her. Who was it?

-

Lex sat on the couch in her basement surrounded by her two best friends. It was Halloween and they were doing what they always did — watching Halloweentown and munching on Lex’s famous candy corn snack mix. Lex was on the edge of her seat. She had something special planned for the movie marathon this year.

Suddenly, the movie cut out and someone wearing a silly pink bunny mask came on screen, yelling “Boo!” Then, the doorbell rang upstairs three times. Phoebe and Ryder screamed.

Lex cracked up. She couldn’t stop, even when she saw her friends didn’t look very happy.

“You do this to us every Halloween, Lex,” Phoebe pouted. “Isn’t it getting old?”

“Nope,” Lex smiled. “And I don’t do this every year. I change the prank every time, duh. Also, how awesome was it that trick-or-treaters rang the doorbell right as I yelled on screen?” “Just once I’d like to prank you,” Ryder grumbled. “I’m the one who was born on Halloween, guys,” Lex reminded. “This is my thing.” “You did that on your own?” Phoebe doubted. “Well, no, Jess did some stuff,” Lex admitted to getting help from her big sister. “But it was my idea.”

“Wait, when did Jess help? I thought she couldn’t make it home for your birthday?” Ryder asked.

“She couldn’t,” Lex confirmed. “I thought of it before she even left for college again this year, and she knew just what to do.”

“I can’t believe she helped you,” Phoebe said. “She hated your pranks as much as we did. She always said we should get back at you!”

“This year she got to be the pranker, and she loved it. She even bought the mask because it cost more than my allowance.”

“Well, I can’t believe she didn’t come home for your birthday this year,” Ryder butted in. “Didn’t she take a bus for hours last year? And doesn’t she have a car at school now?”

“Yeah, but she has a lot of work to do, so she’s coming home next weekend. I get it,” Lex said, even though she was still a little bummed.

Lex heard the door open and light from upstairs streamed into the room. “Are you hooligans ready for cake?”

“Yes, Mr. Ferrero,” Lex heard her friends agree. Her parents came down the stairs with her cake and everyone sang “Happy Birthday.”

“Can I use your phone to call Jess, Dad?” Lex asked. “Why? She’s probably almost …” “Almost what, Dad?” Lex asked, watching her parents exchange a look.

“Almost done studying, of course. Here’s my phone.”

Lex tried calling Jess a few times, but she kept getting her voicemail. When she walked back over to her friends, she heard them questioning her dad.

“We thought you were going to warn us about the prank this year!”

“As if I’d ever tell my dad about the prank I was planning,” Lex scoffed. “He’s the worst secretkeeper of all time.” “Ain’t that the truth,” Mrs. Ferrero laughed. Soon, light came streaming through the basement window. Lex knew what that meant. “Mom, there must be trick-or-treaters coming. They activated the driveway light.”

But Mrs. Ferrero seemed distracted by a text that on her phone.

“Mom, they’re going to get impatient,” Lex reminded. “Actually, I can’t believe they haven’t rung the bell yet.”

“Ok, ok, I’m going!” Mrs. Ferrero was gone for a few minutes when all the lights in the basement went out. It was pitch black.

“What’s going on?” Phoebe asked. “Lex, is this another one of your pranks?”

“Not mine, this isn’t very scary,” Lex shrugged. Suddenly, someone tapped her on the shoulder. When Lex turned around, all she saw the pink bunny mask from the video. “AHHHHHHH,” Lex yelled. “What’s going on?!” “I hope someone got that on video,” the bunny teased before removing the mask to reveal …
