HOW DOES TOOTHPASTE WORK?

- — Christina, 12, CA

Pastes, gels, fruity, minty ... there are many different types of toothpaste! But even though toothpastes come in a variety of flavors and textures, they all rely on the same active ingredient: fluoride. Known as “nature’s cavity fighter,” fluoride strengthens enamel, which is the protective surface around your teeth. Enamel is made of closely-packed mineral crystals that shield teeth from the effects of acids and plaque. Every day, these minerals are lost, and unfortunately your body does not make more minerals on its own to replace them. That’s where toothpaste comes into play. The fluoride in it will deposit minerals back into the enamel so the protective shield around your teeth remains strong.
