City recruits 600 elderly undercover volunteers to fight illegal pyramid scheme

The Ningbo market supervision authority has built a volunteer team of over 600 elderly people to fight health care product fraud and related illegal pyramid schemes, the Qianjiang Evening News reported.

These elderly people, many of whom are victims of similar fake products, play the role of spies, providing information on the fraudulent products and location of illegal pyramid selling to the supervision bureau.

In the city of Haishu, Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, two volunteers helped the local market supervision bureau crack open a case.

Such fraudulent companies are usually very alert about the visitors at their product information sessions. “For such illegal pyramid selling activities, they never allow young people to come into the session,” the local bureau staff told the Qianjiang Evening News.

Pan Jianfei, the director of the department of Health Care Products, Food and Cosmetics Supervision at the Market Supervision Bureau of Ningbo, said elderly people are the targets of such illegal companies. Hence, they can gather more clues, but their safety is always a priority.

“Among the elderly volun- teers, half of them have bought fake health care products, so they are willing to do this work,” Pan said.
