Diabetes caused by fat
BODY fat causes type 2 diabetes by releasing an enzyme that leads to insulin resistance, according to Australian researchers. Experts long blamed the liver for pumping out a protein that triggers the disease, which prevents the body from breaking down sugar.
But a study led by Prof. Carsten Schmitz-Peiffer at the Garvan
Institute of Medical Research suggests fat tissue is the culprit.
Schmitz-Peiffer notes targeting the protein, called kinase C epsilon, is a “new possible approach for diabetes treatment.”
