CLAIMS about health benefits from staying on your feet at work aren’t standing up to criticism!
According to the Mayo Clinic, office workers who sit for eight hours a day run a similar risk of dying as smokers. But the recent craze of standing desks won’t help reverse the trend, according to researchers at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.
Their analysis of 20 studies consisting of 2,000 participants found little evidence to prove standing or treadmill desks offered a boost to physical well-being.
And while proponents claim standing burns twice the calories of sitting, Harvard University experts discovered standing only burned eight more calories an hour!
“Use of a standing desk for three hours burns an extra 24 calories,” reads their report, “about the same number of calories in a carrot.”
