BEST BOOZE FOR DIETERS

Enjoy yourself without guilt

Globe - - HEALTH REPORT -

GETTING into the holiday spirit doesn’t have to mean packing on the pounds! Stick to your weight loss plan by sipping on low-calorie alcoholic options.

A 1.5-ounce shot of vodka, gin, rum, whiskey or tequila contains about 97 calories, making these the most waistline-friendly types of booze.

But be careful about how you create cocktails. Mixers such as juice, sugary soda, syrups, cream and coconut add extra calories and fat. Use diet soda, seltzer or water instead.

“Margaritas and piña coladas can have close to 500 calories per drink, and could be a real challenge for anyone with a weight loss goal,” says Ginger Hultin, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

A bit of bubbly is another way to toast your efforts — as champagne clocks in at about 84 calories per four ounces. Or choose a traditional martini for an average 124 calories per 2.5 ounce serving.

When it comes to wine, watch out. A dry variety can be about 106 calories for five ounces, but the same amount of a sweet dessert wine will likely surpass 200 calories.

And if you want six-pack abs, steer clear of beer. A half-dozen cans have more than 800 calories!

Stay away from fruity and sugary adult beverages, and stick to low-calorie liquors mixed with seltzer
