Singing helps beat Parkinson’s disease
SINGING may be the key to beating hard-to-treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. While prescription drugs can help reduce tremors and improve muscle movement, they often become less effective as the condition progresses. But Iowa State University researchers discovered singing bolsters respiratory control, improves the ability to swallow — and makes patients happier to boot! The scientists theorize fluctuating hormone levels may be behind the positive results and suggest music therapy could be developed as a future treatment.
