BELOVED comic Carol

Burnett is going bald — the final insult after a lifetime of tragedy and stress!

Although the 85-year-old TV legend tries to hide her dramatically receding hairline, medical experts insist many post-menopausal women go bald — and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

New York internist Dr. Stuart Fischer, who hasn’t treated the star, says Carol’s “frontal balding” may be due to “stress” or other health issues, including “thyroid disease, autoimmune illness and most importantly, the side effect of many medications.”

The doc notes, “Almost any medication could theoretically cause hair loss — for example, steroids for severe arthritis as well as antidepressants.”

He says, “Rogaine shampoo is helpful in the earliest stages, as are certain nutritional supplements.”

Transplants can also be effective, but they “won’t help if balding is due to a serious illness” or extreme stress, adds Fischer.

“Certainly, Carol has been through a lot during her life,” says a source.

She was raised in poverty by her beloved grandma and divorced twice before finding happiness with current hubby Brian Miller.

But her greatest blow was the tragic death of her oldest daughter with second husband Joe Hamilton, Carrie. After helping teenage Carrie beat booze and drugs, Carol was shattered when the 38-year-old died battling lung and brain cancer in 2002.

The star, who also has daughters Jody, 51, and Erin, 50, admits she’s haunted by Carrie, saying: “I think of her every day. She never leaves me. I just feel her.”

The source says, “She’s facing her own mortality and she’s missing Carrie terribly. She’s also seen the TV industry pass her by and may be feeling a little insignificant.

“All of the stress has left her weak and wreaked havoc on her health — and hairline.”
