M*A*S*H STAR STIERS’ GAY HEARTACHE

Globe - - THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES -

M*A*S*H actor David Ogden Stiers kept his homosexuality secret for years. "He wanted to be open but he was terrified it would end his career," says a friend. The 75-year-old star, who played pompous Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester Ill on the hit series from 1977 to 1983, lost his battle with bladder cancer March 3. When he finally came out as gay in 2009, he admits he did it to find love! "I could claim noble reasons in order to move gay rights forward, but it is for far more selfish reasons," he confessed. "Now is the time I wish to find someone!" But, sadly, it was too little, too late.
