MARRIAGE MESS SEARS SCARLETT
A BITTER divorce from her second husband sure hit home for SCARLETT JOHANSSON, 34, as she planned her upcoming movie, Marriage Story. The stunning actress, who’s freshly engaged to SNL star COLIN JOST, 37, confides she drowned in her own marital sorrows — and downed a fair amount of wine — during a one-on-one meeting with filmmaker NOAH BAUMBACH (JENNIFER JASON LEIGH’s exhusband) to discuss the new flick.
Whining over a glass of white about her ill-fated three-year marriage and divorce-custody battle with French businessman ROMAIN DAURIAC — with whom she has a five-year-old daughter, ROSE — proved fruitful, she says, helping
prepare her for the flick’s brutal breakup. “I was actually going through a divorce. I didn’t know what we were going to talk about,” she confesses. “I just kind of blew into the room, ordered a glass of white wine and started complaining. And he was just listening and very attentive ... And then he kind of cut it short and said, ‘Funny you should mention it ...’”
Adds the actress: “It felt sort of fated in a way ... It somehow came at just the right time.”
In the movie, Scarlett plays an unhappy actress who feels suffocated by her husband, played by ADAM DRIVER. Then they decide to call it quits, and things get nasty, especially during a heated meltdown scene between the splitting spouses. How intense did it get between Scarlett and Adam? “It was like watching two of the best athletes compete,” spills the director.
