SAVANNAH GUTHRIE

Her eye bulges with blood after son, 3, slams her with sharp toy

-

STUNNING TV anchor Savannah Guthrie is terrified she’ll become permanently blind after suffering a nightmare injury while playing with her toddler son!

The 47-year-old Today newsgal revealed how three-year-old Charley accidentally clobbered her right eye with a toy train, leading alarmed docs to order her to stay home from her grueling early-morning schedule.

“It has a really pointy edge and he threw it right at me,” she recalls. “It tore my retina. It was so blurry … .

“And then I lost my vision in my right eye about 24 hours later,” she confesses, adding that her peeper had filled with blood.

Since the accident, surgeons “have been doing a bunch of laser procedures,” she says.

“They’re essentially trying to weld back this tear in the retina very carefully, and really trying hard to avoid … having to do a major surgery.”

A Today insider says Savannah has been publicly poohpoohing the seriousness of the injury — and, just two days after the incident, the star, wearing glasses as a protective measure, returned to the air to co-host NBC’s coverage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!

In private, though, she’s “terrified”

of the “worst-case scenario” that she could end up blind in the eye.

Dr. Gabe Mirkin says Savannah has good reason to fear for her sight.

“There is a very good chance of someone going blind if they suffer a detached retina,” says Mirkin, who has not treated the star.

“Surgery is always the last resort,” he adds. “But if they’re still considering it days after the detachment, there may have been complications that could have very serious results.”

Meanwhile, Today bigwigs are “very worried about the situation” because she’s become the show’s most valuable personality since Matt Lauer was booted for sex harassment.

And, shockingly, there is no backup plan, says an insider.
