The couple live separate lives, with Rush at his Florida
compound and Kathryn spending most of her time in Boston or New York, sources say.
“His ego kept him from divorcing Kathryn,” spills a pal, who charges childless Rush had private eyes track his wife after the cheating scandal exploded.
“Rush says he doesn’t want to die an old fool,” an insider says. “He has few priorities now that he sees the end of the line. Making sure Kathryn doesn’t make out like a bandit upon his death is a top objective now.” The conservative pundit failed to get a prenuptial agreement from Kathryn, says a friend.
“He worried that a public battle would damage his reputation and that his listeners would feel he’s not practicing what he preaches when it comes to family values,” the friend says.
A Florida legal expert says while it’s unlikely the radio host would be able to leave his wife completely high and dry in a divorce, he could protect a huge chunk of his massive fortune.
“So much of it depends on what assets he had entering into the marriage and what he earned while the two were married,” says the source. “Since their marriage is fairly short-lived, most of his earnings came before they wed and he would have a good chance of protecting those assets.”
Another source insists the marriage is “strong and healthy,” and the bad buzz about Kathryn is “categorically untrue.”
The friend says the thought of Kathryn ending up with a fortune angers the radio king.
“It wasn’t a problem that she was living lavishly on his dime when he was in good health and didn’t see his own mortality. Now the stakes have completely changed.”
Rush announced his killer cancer condition on his Feb. 3 show. Lung cancer patients with his diagnosis have less than a 10 percent chance of survival over a five-year period.
The powerful pundit has survived past scandals and health issues. Despite numerous antidrug rants on his radio show, he faced court charges that he was “doctor-shopping” pain pills in 2006, with authorities saying he allegedly received more than 2,000 painkillers from four separate doctors over a six-month period.
The charges were later dropped, though Rush had to pay $30,000 to cover the cost of the investigation.
Now, he’s facing an even greater challenge.
“He sees the mistakes he’s made in life,” says the pal, “and wants to rectify at least one of them when it comes to Kathryn.
“She hasn’t been a real wife to him for years, and he’s adamant she’s not going to profit from his death.”
